A Wild August

August was quite a month for wildlife, with special days celebrating lions, orangutans, and elephants. Our artists love animals and couldn’t let these occasions pass without adding a splash of color. Inspired by these amazing species and the efforts to protect them, they created three new pictures. Read on to discover some fascinating facts about the animals behind them!

A lion’s roar can be heard from up to 5 miles (8 km) away – but these powerful cats have a softer side, too. Lions are highly social and live in prides, where they rest, hunt, and raise their cubs together. And they certainly know how to relax: they can spend up to 20 hours a day resting or sleeping.

Orangutans are just as fascinating. Among the smartest animals on Earth, they use tools and build a new nest high in the trees almost every night. They’ve even been observed using large leaves as umbrellas when it rains. Their name comes from the Malay and Indonesian words orang hutan, meaning “person of the forest” – a fitting name for these remarkably intelligent great apes.

Elephants are also known for their remarkable intelligence, and they have surprisingly complex social and emotional lives. They comfort one another and can even recognize themselves in a mirror – something very few animals can do. Their trunks are incredible: with tens of thousands of muscles, they’re delicate enough to pick up tiny objects and powerful enough to move heavy branches.
