You started drawing at a very young age. What made you fall in love with creating art?
I think my love for drawing was always there. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t enjoy creating art. But I especially remember a moment when I was a young teenager. I spent a lot of time drawing a T-Rex and was incredibly happy with the final result. That feeling of creating something I was truly proud of made me realize - this is what I want to do as a profession.
How did the idea for the unusual feline world of “The Furrytails Family” collection come to you?
The idea for “The Furrytails Family” came from my wish to go on a little journey through different eras and worlds, while creating a collection that still feels connected. A feline family tree was the perfect concept to bring this idea to life. Each cat represents a different personality and character – from a pirate cat to a cowboy cat – with its own unique story and identity. Together, they form one big imaginative family, allowing everyone to discover a character they can relate to and feel connected with.
There seems to be a whole story behind the feline family tree. How do you create backstories for your characters?
Creating the backstories for the characters of “The Furrytails Family” I started with the historical period and the personality I wanted to explore. I tried to imagine what kind of feline characters could have existed in those different eras. I created relationships and family connections that could bring the different eras together and added playful and sometimes quirky or humorous details to make each cat unique. For example, Mme Steamfur is not just an inventor – she is a brilliant and slightly eccentric mind from the Wild West who created a steam-powered airship and became the first flying cat of Whiskerville.
Every cat in the collection has such a distinct personality. Which character was the most fun to create?
All of the characters were fun to create in their own way, but Catbeard was probably one of the most enjoyable ones. This cat has so many different details and little stories hidden in the design, which made the process especially exciting and while creating him, I constantly had scenes from “Pirates of the Caribbean” playing in my head.
